On view from May 22 to August 22, The Window celebrates summer with the surreal beauty of American artist Petra Cortright’s digitised landscapes. Over the course of 9-minutes, wet sunlight Paradis “pomme de terre” 3D (2024) guides us through a transfixing, ever-changing computer-generated landscape at times seamlessly and at others with distinctly technological turbulence. As our perspective surveys the bucolic scene from above and below, the geologically impossible mashup unites brilliant sunshine, cumulous clouds, desert flowers, parched mountains, reflective rivers, playful butterflies and even outer space into a singular ethereal composition that is at once unnerving and inviting.

Available for viewing 24 hours a day at the ground floor of the Time & Life building on Bruton Street, London The Window is a public art project by CHANEL Culture Fund. Showcasing compelling works of contemporary digital art, The Window offers passers-by a chance to interact with cutting-edge artworks and engage with this fast-moving genre. Cortright’s wet sunlight Paradis “pomme de terre” 3D follows on the heels of installations by celebrated artists such as Refik Anadol, LuYang, Sarah Meyohas, Universal Everything, Jakob Kudsk Steensen and most recently the global debut of a new work by Chinese artist Cao Fei.

wet sunlight Paradis "pomme de terre" 3D balances the low-level anxiety felt as our environment starts to defy natural logic with a sense of calm inspired by the earth’s delicate and sublime beauty. With aesthetic roots in early visual systems of documenting and classifying the natural world, the digital artwork combines layers of information found surfing the internet with scientific land-use studies to create a panorama in constant motion. At once ethereal and unsettling, Cortright’s scenic journey ponders the way in which the speed of technology increasingly distances us from the slow, cyclical pacing of the earth’s organic systems.

Celebrated for both for her role in the rise of ‘Net-Art’ – a movement that uses the internet as its primary source – and as a ‘post-Internet artist’, Petra Cortright (b. 1986, Santa Barbara, US) first gained attention for webcam self-portrait videos altered by animated gifs that she would post to her YouTube account and caption with spam text. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include natural imagery – influenced by her roots in the American West – to create paintings and video works that translate found imagery into ‘digital brushstrokes’. Cortright continually finds ways to adapt her work to suit the public sphere by producing mesmerising, increasingly sophisticated video installations. An earlier iteration of this work, green hill green light esprit de corp (2023), was featured at Art Basel Parcours in June of last year.
