Salim Green’s father describes the abandoned or deteriorating homes in his hometown of Waterloo, Iowa as “sugarshacks.” Green borrowed the term for his first exhibition at Société, which recreates the fellowship hall at Payne Memorial AME, a church in the city’s historically Black east side. “Shifty,” a fluid character that the artist has used as a proxy in past works and lectures, appears in various guises throughout the exhibition as a nebulous guide through different registers of space and time.

Salim Green (b. 1996, Middletown, CT) earned a BA from Wesleyan University in 2020 and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2024. He currently is a resident at Callie's, Berlin. His work is on view at Boros Bunker, Berlin and has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at François Ghebaly, Los Angeles, New York; Société, Berlin; Josh Lilley, London; SculptureCenter, New York; Bellyman, Los Angeles; Stony Island Arts Bank, Chicago; Fábrica, Mexico City. His work is included in the collections of the Getty Research Institute, The Kinsey Collection and the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University. He lives and works in Los Angeles and elsewhere.
